Raw audio files can take up a tremendous amount of disc space. To get around this we try to reduce the space that they occupy by using various 'compression' methods. The aim is to reduce the size of the audio file without affecting the 'quality' of the audio signal on playback.

I look at various methods for compressing audio for archive, through to streaming, for the delivery of audio over an IP network. As part of this process I will also examine the tools used.

Throughout this discussion I will assume you are working with source material that is yours, and wish to either archive that material, or transcribe it for playback on a different medium/device. This different medium/device could be say an Internet stream in one instance, or a portable media player in another.
